Justice Kiryabwire Urges Bujjuko Residents to Embrace Small Claims Procedure

The people in Bujjuko District have been urged to embrace the Small Claims Procedure to settle their debts and desist from resorting to witchcraft tendencies to recover their money.
The call was made Court of Appeal's Hon. Justice Geofrey Kiryabwire, who doubles as Chairperson Small Claims Procedure during the launch of the fast access to justice initiative at Bujjuko Magistrate's Court on Friday September 23, 2022. He noted that through the procedure, courts have cleared many cases.
Small Claims Procedure (SCP) is designed to help parties to resolve civil disputes quickly and in expensively without the aid of advocates. Under SCP, claims must be less than Shs10million.
Hon. Justice Kiryabwire encouraged the public to utilize the Courts near them to report these cases. He also asked the local leaders in the area to become ambassadors of the Court. "Spread the gospel, educate the people about court and its procedures. Let's work together to solve disputes...or settle these disputes to avoid being dragged to court." he said.
He also pledged to advocate for a proper court instead of a "kaduka" court.
Present at the launch was the Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Ms Maria Lubega who thanked the Judiciary for bringing the initiative to her area. Others present were judicial officers; the Assistant Registrar Mpigi High Court, HW Atukwasa Justine, Chief Magistrate Mpigi HW Jane Nanvuma, Magistrate Grade I Bujjuko HW Imran Kintu, religious and civic leaders.
The launch brings to a total of 164functional small claims courts in the country.
